RiverStone International Australia is seeking a Senior Claims Consultant to join its Sydney Claims team. In this senior technical role, you will manage a portfolio of complex casualty, liability and financial lines claims within a legacy and run-off environment. Working closely with the Head of Claims, you will provide expertise across the full claims lifecycle, influence key claims decisions, support claims finality strategies and help develop technical capability within the wider team.

Responsibilities

In this role you will:
  • Manage a portfolio of complex casualty, liability, financial lines and other litigated insurance claims.
  • Assess and determine coverage, liability, quantum and policy response issues.
  • Develop and implement effective claims strategies to progress claims towards resolution and settlement.
  • Maintain accurate reserves and ensure claims are adjusted in accordance with company guidelines and authority levels.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce exposures, resolve static claims and achieve claims finality.
  • Promptly agree and settle valid claims where appropriate.
  • Act as a technical referral point for complex claims, disputed coverage matters, litigation strategy and reserving decisions.
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching and mentoring to junior members of the Claims team.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with lawyers, brokers, delegated claims handlers, co-insurers, reinsurers and other external stakeholders.
  • Participate in portfolio reviews, due diligence exercises and run-off initiatives.
  • Monitor claims trends, legal developments and regulatory changes within the Australian market.
  • Escalate significant claims issues and exposures in accordance with company governance requirements.
  • Contribute to business improvement initiatives and identify opportunities to enhance claims processes and controls.
  • Ensure complaints and disputes are managed appropriately and within required regulatory timeframes.
  • Promote fair customer outcomes and ensure claims are handled in line with regulatory obligations and conduct risk expectations.

Requirements

We are looking for someone with the following:

Experience & Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years' experience handling long-tail insurance claims, including casualty  (liability bodily injury and liability property damage) and/or  also exposure to financial lines business.
  • Demonstrable experience managing complex and litigated claims within the Australian insurance market.
  • Previous experience in a senior technical claims role.
  • Experience within legacy, run-off or discontinued portfolios is highly desirable.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring or providing technical guidance to other claims professionals.
  • Degree in Law, Business or a related discipline preferred.
Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of Australian insurance claims practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of the Australian legal system and General Insurance Code of Practice.
  • Good understanding of insurance and reinsurance principles.
  • Knowledge of reserving practices, litigation management and claims resolution strategies.
  • Understanding of legacy insurance portfolios, run-off operations and claims finality techniques.
